“I’ve often sailed in her.”

Dictionaries has long been regarded as an authentic tool to understand the world. Despite how legitimate and authoritative it seems, it is not simply an unbiased reflection of the society that produces it. The editorial actively re-invent the world with categorising, labelling and selecting every word, and all of them are carefully allocated to the two available genders. This is an on-going research and writing project based on the Oxford Advanced Learner’s English-Chinese Dictionary, in this particular exhibition, the artist extracts several example sentences which involve “She”, and re-arrange those fragmented moments into a poem or short stories.

Large Parties Are So Intimate

He entered by the back door.
She was agitated by his sudden appearance at the party.
At the back of his mind was the vague idea that he had met her before.
He aggravates her just by looking at her.

He made advances to her.
He felt something akin to pity.
He patted her affectionately on the head.
She resented his persistent approaches.

She rejected his advances.

His face was ashy grey.
He knew he had hurt her and begged her to forgive him.
But he has an unfortunate aptitude for saying the wrong thing.
Almost on one believed him.
He could no longer hold back his tears.

She offered him a lift and he accepted.
She smiled at him, and he smiled back.
That’s the nearest approach to a smile he ever makes.
He left without speaking to anyone else.

They say nasty things about him behind his back:
“You can see he’s infatuated by her – he was all over her at the party.”

In the drive she acted out the role of wronged lover to make him feel guilty.
He begged for forgiveness.
Her reply caught him off base.

She asked him to come to the party.
